What to Do When Roof Leakage Appears After Heavy Rain

Start with safety and containment

Move electrical items away from damp areas and contain dripping water where possible. Avoid stepping onto wet roof surfaces without proper access and safety equipment.

Record the leak pattern

Photos taken during and after rain are useful. Note whether the leak appears near gutters, roof junctions, skylights, penetrations or ceiling edges.

Inspection should follow the water path

Roof leakage is not always directly above the stain. Water can travel along beams, membranes or ceiling voids before appearing indoors.
